Cobb County includes the cities of Acworth, Austell, Kennesaw, Marietta, Powder Springs and Smyrna. Its county seat
and largest city is Marietta, which is located in the center of the county. The county was named for Thomas Willis
Cobb, who in the early 19th century was a United States representative and senator from Georgia. Marietta was named
for his wife, Mary Moore Cobb.
Cobb, along with several other counties, was created December 3, 1832, by the Georgia General Assembly from the huge
Cherokee "county" territory — land northwest of the Chattahoochee River which the state confiscated from the Cherokee
Nation and redistributed to settlers via lottery, following the passage of the federal Indian Removal Act.
As of the 2000 census, the population was 607,751. The county's population has continued to grow. The 2009 estimate
from the U.S. Census Bureau was 714,692 people. The county is part of the original and core (five-county) Atlanta
metropolitan area, which is included in the Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Marietta, Georgia metropolitan statistical area.
The U.S. Census Bureau ranks Cobb County as the most-educated in the state of Georgia and 12th among all counties in
the United States. It has ranked among top 100 wealthiest counties in the United States.

Visiting the Georgia Mountains in the Fall
Living so close to the Georgia Mountains, gives Cobb County residents a quick access to Fall beauty. Driving to Dawsonville, Dahlonega, Ellijay or Helen in October or early November will surround you with Nature’s glorious Fall color.
This last weekend, my husband, daughter and granddaughters visited Amicalola Falls, one of the seven (7) natural wonders of Georgia. Amicalola Falls is nestled in the North Georgia Mountains at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountain range between Ellijay and Dahlonega.
Amicalola was named by Native Americans. In their language, the meaning of Amicalola is tumbling water. The name certainly describes this beautiful fall!
What
a beautiful sight! We went to the waterfall through Amicalola Falls Park. The park was very busy and we had to wait a few minutes to find a parking place. The breathtaking view of the waterfall was worth the wait and the walk. If you don’t want to climb lots of stairs, go to the visitor’s center, park there and walk.
We took the strenuous journey down the stairs to the base of the waterfall. The walkway to the base of the falls is recycled tires and the path is so comfortable to walk on. The leaves were just starting to turn. Lots of different shades of yellow were in view blended by natured with some reds and browns. Green leaves are still there to complete the beautiful color palette of Fall.
When everyone seems to be feeling the economic crunch, why not take the time to enjoy our Georgia beauty? And it is so close to home! Maybe you will want to take a picnic lunch and spend the day.
As we drove by Burt’s Pumpkin Farm, we saw lots of families enjoying the hay rides and picking out their Halloween pumpkin. Burt’s Pumpkin Farm has lots of visitors every year and this year is no exception. Near Dawsonville, Burt’s Pumpkin Farm, is a close favorite of Cobb County residents.
Let us know how you enjoy your visit to the Georgia Mountains this Fall.
